Sorting Book Characters Into Their Hogwarts Houses
Updated: Oct 20, 2020
One of the first things I do after reading a book is mentally sort the characters into their Hogwarts Houses. Yes, I know my opinion is subjective but there's always a gut instinct as to where a character belongs. Recently I saw Tricia Levenseller describe her newest novel, The Shadows Between Us, as a Slytherin romance. This made me think that maybe I could write a post about my choice of sorting - though I will never claim to be wiser than the sorting hat.
"You might belong in Gryffindor / Where dwell the brave at heart / Their daring, nerve and chivalry / Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff / Where they are just and loyal / Those patient Hufflepuffs are true / And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw / If you've a ready mind / Where those of wit and learning / Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin / You'll make your real friends / Those cunning folk use any means / To achieve their ends." - Sorting Hat
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Description: Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.
Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.
The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.
And love makes fools of us all.
The Sorting
Lou Le Blanc - Slytherin
Cunning, Ambitious, Creative, Ingenious
Lou is a survivor to the very heart of the word. She uses her cunning and ambition to remain one step ahead of the many enemies around her. She is not a wilting flower but rather a strong and mighty force to be reckoned with in Serpent & Dove.
Reid - Gryffindor
Daring, Brave, Nerve, Valiant
Reid is a man filled to the brim with teachings and scriptures that have mandated his life since day one. He has been molded into the image of the man he admires, the leader of the chasseurs. But through knowing Lou and who she is he manages to fight against the very system that is meant to keep them apart. He is fierce in everything he does - from memorizing his beliefs to breaking them for the woman he loves.
After by Anna Todd

Description: Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.
But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.
But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.
He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn't the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.
Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?
Unless…could this belove?
The Sorting
Tessa - Hufflepuff
Reliable, Loyal, Diligent, Kind
Tessa has always been portrayed as the reasonable one in the relationship between her and Hardin. Saying that though, doesn't mean she doesn't make her own mistakes through the course of the series. But in the midst of all the drama, and there is a lot, she remains steadfast and loyal to the people she loves, whether that be Hardin, Landon, or Karen.
Hardin - Slytherin
Cunning, Ambitious, Creative, Ingenious
Hardin can get a bad rap, and yes he is a morally grey character by every standard. He isn't generically good or even a hero of the books but he is important to them. Hardin possesses so much talent and creativity along with the ambition to drive him - all of which are what Tessa sees behind the mask of bad behavior.
Romanov by Nadine Brandes

Description: The history books say I died.
They don’t know the half of it.
Anastasia “Nastya” Romanov was given a single mission: to smuggle an ancient spell into her suitcase on her way to exile in Siberia. It might be her family’s only salvation. But the leader of the Bolshevik army is after them, and he’s hunted Romanov before.
Nastya’s only chances of saving herself and her family are to either release the spell and deal with the consequences, or enlist help from Zash, the handsome soldier who doesn’t act like the average Bolshevik. Nastya has only dabbled in magic, but it doesn’t frighten her half as much as her growing attraction to Zash. She likes him. She thinks he might even like her.
That is, until she’s on one side of a firing squad . . . and he’s on the other.
The Sorting
Nastya - Gryffindor
Daring, Brave, Nerve, Valiant
Nastya is a vibrant spirit in a drab world. She is daring in her mischief and continued bravery in the face of danger. Her ability to be the life blood of the family she loves in the worst of situations is its own kind brave. She sacrifices everything for her family and a hope that they will one day be together outside the watchful eye of the Bolshevik army.
Alexei - Ravenclaw
Intelligent, Clever, Witty, Creative
Alexei may be technically a minor character in the books but he brings with him so many blessings that grace the story around him. He is sickly ill but he never lets that stop him in his clever adventures. Always ready with an amusing comeback, he grounds Nastya to their family. He is just as strong as his sister and together they make an unstoppable pair.
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

Description: It all begins with a fugitive billionaire and the promise of a cash reward. Turtles All the Way Down is about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.
In his long-awaited return, John Green shares Aza's story with shattering, unflinching clarity.
The Sorting
Aza Holmes - Hufflepuff
Reliable, Loyal, Diligent, Kind
Aza Holmes is a character I relate to in so many ways given our shared experiences with anxiety and OCD. Because of this, I may have been biased in my decision to place her in my house, Hufflepuff. She definitely displays Gryffindor qualities in her bravery regarding her mental illness but she's also kind to a fault. She puts others ahead of herself because she doesn't think she's worth it considering her perpetual thought spirals.
The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

Description: In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.
When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.
The Sorting
Celine - Gryffindor
Daring, Brave, Nerve, Valiant
Celine is a lion among mere men in The Beautiful. She is uniquely defiant in a society that wishes to contain her. She doesn't falter under the challenges posed toward her or under the intense gaze of Bastien. Her actions are purposeful and filled with the same strength she demonstrates over and over again throughout the book.
Bastien - Ravenclaw
Intelligent, Clever, Witty, Creative
Bastien is much like Celine in many ways but I made the decision to place him in Ravenclaw. He is always anticipating other's moves and thinking 20 paces ahead of wherever everyone else is. This and the banter they share is why he compliments Celine so well and makes him a perfect Ravenclaw.
