Bookish Playlist Roundup

Updated: Oct 20, 2020

Hello everyone! With more books read come more bookish playlists. In case you haven't seen my last post in this blog series, let me explain a bit. I make a book playlist for almost every single book I read. I need ambiance music in the background to get into a story which is where Spotify comes in.

Here I'll be breaking down the most recent playlists I've made so you guys can understand my process and hopefully use them for your own reading.

Title: The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

Rating: 5/5

Description: In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet:The Beautiful.

About The Playlist: When I was making the playlist for The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh I really wanted to include a specific kind of sound. I wanted to feature music inspired by the two predominant settings of the main character, Celine. These were New Orleans and Paris. Now in total fairness, I didn't have a lot of songs at the ready that matched what I wanted to go with for this one. So I did more research and dug around until I found songs with that sound I was looking for.

Favorite Songs: Grace by Rag'n'Bone, Derniere Danse by Indila, and Delirium Waltz by Vono Box.

Title: Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines

Rating: 5/5

Description: To want what you’re not supposed to have…

She is only nineteen.

She is his new stepfather’s daughter.

She is still naïve and innocent due to spending the last three years taking care of her sick mother.

But for twenty-four year old Rush Finlay, she is the only thing that has ever been off limits. His famous father’s guilt money, his mother’s desperation to win his love, and his charm are the three reasons he has never been told no.

Blaire Wynn left her small farmhouse in Alabama, after her mother passed away, to move in with her father and his new wife in their sprawling beach house along the Florida gulf coast. She isn’t prepared for the lifestyle change and she knows she’ll never fit into this world. Then there is her sexy stepbrother who her father leaves her with for the summer while he runs off to Paris with his wife. Rush is as spoiled as he is gorgeous. He is also getting under her skin. She knows he is anything but good for her and that he’ll never be faithful to anyone. He is jaded and has secrets Blaire knows she may never uncover but even knowing all of that…

Blaire just may have fallen too far.

About The Playlist: Creating the playlist for Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines I wanted to include a good balance of melancholic love songs, songs about being lost in yourself, and a selection of songs about family dysfunction. All of which this book has in spades. This romance series has been in my life for years and it was so fun to think back on all my knowledge of it from 10+ rereads to create a cohesive playlist.

Favorite Songs: Did I Do Something Wrong? By Bex, Tomorrow Tonight by Loote, and How You Get The Girl by Taylor Swift

Title: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Rating: 5/5

Description: Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle:thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou's, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

About The Playlist: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is an experience in its own right. This meant that when I started working on the playlist I was faced with a daunting expectation to live up to. I ended up choosing a lot of delicate semi-love songs because of the fine tipping point of which the relationship between Lou and Reid stands. Songs on the playlist are my attempt at a good selection of songs in the bittersweet range.

Favorite Songs: La Lune by Billie Marten, Fortress by Bear's Den, and Home by Catie Turner
